2003 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The modern american wagon. introductionthe ford explorer is one of the best sport-utilities in its class. A stiffer frame and a fully independent suspension provide superior ride and handling on road and off road. Its v6 was revised last year and a v8 was added as an option. Both are available with a superb five-speed automatic. It's roomy, capable of seating seven people when equipped with the optional third row that folds flat into the cargo floor when not being used.  for 2003, ford added more standard equipment and important new options. Xls and xlt come standard with cloth upholstery; eddie bauer and limited come trimmed in leather.  an overhead-cam v6 engine is standard on all models. An overhead-cam v8 800) is an option for all models except the xls. Ford's new five-speed automatic transmission 1095) is optional and we highly recommend it. Xls comes a high level of standard equipment, including a new am/fm/cassette/cd stereo, but it does not offer some of the high-zoot options available on the other models, including the v8. An $1150 sport group for the xls adds the premium center console, step bars, body-color metallic wheel lip moldings, and 16-inch aluminum wheels.  xlt 28,745) gets nicer sport cloth upholstery, a six-way power driver's seat, body-colored exterior trim, and more luxury features, such as a temperature gauge and compass, map lights and dome lights, outside approach lighting, extra power outlets, and an illuminated keypad for keyless entry. The five-speed automatic transmission is standard, and aluminum alloy wheels replace steel wheels. New for 2003 are a chrome grille and black-grain outside door handles. Leather upholstery with a six-way power driver's seat is available for $655. Six-way adjustable heated power seats with dual manual lumbar supports are used in front, and the driver's seat has a three-position memory feature. The top two explorer models differ only in their distinctive trim: eddie bauer comes with arizona beige bumpers, moldings, lower bodyside cladding, satin-nickel wheels and grille, and p245/65r17 all-terrain tires. Limited uses monochromatic bumpers, moldings and cladding with a silver grille and unique wheels; the limited model is available in white pearl-coat paint with frost accents.  options for all models except xls include third-row seating 670), auxiliary air conditioning 610), running boards 395), power adjustable pedals 120), reverse sensing system 255), and power moonroof 800). The canopy also promises improved side-impact protection by staying inflated for a much longer period of time. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly recommend ordering the safety canopy. Dual front airbags are standard, and feature smart technology that adjusts their inflation rate according to the severity of the accident. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are standard on all models; abs allows the driver to brake and steer at the same time in a panic stop. Seatbelts use retractors and pre-tensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. This newest explorer achieved a 4-star driver/5-star front-passenger ratings in the government's national highway traffic safety administration front crash tests. walkaroundthe current ford explorer is the same length overall as the pre-2002 models, but it rides on a longer wheelbase (by 2 inches) and a much wider track. Pushing the wheels out toward the corners makes the explorer more stable and more comfortable. All new last year, this explorer shares only its name with the pre-2002 models involved in the firestone tire recall.  the explorer's styling is fresh, contemporary. It looks solid and handsome. Smoothly integrated front and rear fascia are used in place of the traditional bumper treatments. Jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Yet this newly designed explorer clearly evokes the previous-generation explorer. No one will have trouble identifying it. Few will notice it at all. I dropped something next to the curb while getting out of the explorer one dark night; hitting the button on the key fob illuminated the approach lights and i immediately spotted it. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but ford says it's a popular feature among loyal owners.  the standard roof rack is designed to support up to 200 pounds. For messier cargo, there's a new nbx package 1110), which includes a yakima multi-use loadwarrior cargo basket, special black exterior trim, special seat cloth, and 17-inch machined aluminum wheels mounted with b. Goodrich rugged trail t/a p245/65r17 tires. interiorthe ford explorer is a comfortable vehicle on long trips. Convenience features abound that make it pleasant while driving and when stopping. The eddie bauer model comes with the traditional beige steering wheel and pinhole leather seating material. Handsome gray wood accents lend a luxurious appearance. Light-colored trim on the inside a-pillars and grab handle add to a light, airy atmosphere. It's a successful execution, though the mouse-fur roof liner is nothing to write home about. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm and supportive, with lots of adjustments.  adjustable pedals, a telescoping steering wheel and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubby holes with rubber mats provide space for wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keep odds and ends in check. Interior door handles seem a bit awkward at first, but that went away with familiarization. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but wouldn't accommodate my one-liter bottle from poland springs. The front power outlet was positioned well for a cell phone, but like most, was a bit of a reach for a radar detector. The trip computer came in handy, calculating the distance to an empty fuel tank.  the front seats are comfortable. They are wider and offer more fore-and-aft travel than before. Seat heaters are part of the eddie bauer way of living. But the buttons that control them are mounted on the sides of seats, which is a bit awkward. Reaching down to the side of the driver's seat, the left hand is confronted with an array of seat adjusters; finding and pressing the seat-heater button is a challenge. Likewise, it isn't always easy to find the height adjuster. But rake is easy to adjust, and there's a knob on the up-level seats for cranking in some lumbar support.  the second row of seats, the row we recommend for those who didn't get to drive or sit up front, is quite comfortable. 2012 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The ford escape is a mid-size sport-utility vehicle with credentials that make it equally suited to urban commutes or weekend off-road outings. The xlt and limited trims feature the same 2. 5-liter engine with a six-speed automatic transmission. A 240-hp 3. 0-liter e85 capable v6 is an available upgrade on xlt and limited models. Standard safety features include front airbags, front seat mounted side airbags and side-curtain airbags for front and rear passengers. For 2012, the escape receives one new exterior color.

2001 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Flexible seating arrangements give families versatility. The third row is cramped for all but smaller children. Expedition's soft suspension filters out unwanted road vibration, and softens potholes, driveway entrances and other bumps. Its 5. 4-liter v8 delivers responsive acceleration performance, while the automatic transmission provides impressively smooth shifting. Power steering is over-assisted to ease maneuvering in crowded parking lots, and a reverse warning system reduces the chance of backing into something. lineuptwo trim levels, xlt and eddie bauer, make up the expedition model range. With little demand for plain, entry-level vehicles in this class, ford equips the xlt well and the eddie bauer even better. Standard equipment for both models includes antilock brakes, third-row seating, and remote keyless entry. Visual differences between xlt and eddie bauer versions are confined to paint and trim. The expedition derives much of its chassis and mechanical hardware from ford's f-150 pickup.  xlt comes standard with a 232-horsepower 4. 6-liter v8.  stepping up to the eddie bauer 4x4 model brings a larger, more powerful 5. 4-liter v8 that produces 260 horsepower. Eddie bauer also adds a power moonroof, leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 290-watt mach am/fm cassette audio system, a 6-cd changer in the center console, and automatic climate control. A tv/vhs rear-seat entertainment system is a new option for the top-level expedition. walkaroundexpedition borrows the best styling elements from the f-150. From nose to windshield, the expedition shares sheet metal with the ford's best-selling pickup.  even though the expedition debuted in 1997, it has aged well. It's still handsome, with a sloping hoodline and rounded front end that reflect attention to aerodynamics. It's a design that pays off with improved fuel efficiency and reduced wind noise. As a matter of necessity, the sides and back are shaped more for utility than style, which look similar to the 2001 explorer. Clever use of trim and rounded corners add eye appeal.  stretching more than 17 feet from nose to tail, the expedition is big. Twisting it counterclockwise opens the rear liftgate for better access and bigger load jobs. The load height is a bit high on the expedition, however. A windstar minivan is far better in this regard.  lights on the running boards make climbing aboard easier on dark and stormy nights. Hefty front tow hooks facilitate yanking for those who stray too far into the muck. interiorexpedition's interior is big and comfortable. Climbing in and out is a chore, however, with the tall ride height. Women wearing nice dresses often struggle to climb up, something that's impossible to do gracefully. Expedition can carry up to nine people, when equipped with bench seats at all three locations. A more comfortable arrangement is six passengers, two in each row.  optional captain's chairs in the second row 795), give rear-seat passengers a more luxurious experience. The downside is that the space between them is still there when the third-row bench is removed and the rear seats are folded down; this can present a hazard for a big dog because it can step or fall into the well between the seats, so it's better to have the center seats folded up for this situation.  the available third-row bench provides seating for two more passengers, but it's cramped back there. Once back there, there's no headroom and legroom is cramped. It's best reserved for children who have grown out of booster seats, but haven't grown to adult heights.  the third-row bench can be folded up: flip the lever, fold the seatback down, grab the floor lever and lift up. A kickstand secures it in the up position. This is a good solution when carrying cargo, but it isn't a friendly place for a dog because of all the hardware sticking out of the exposed seat bottom.  a better option is to yank the third row out and wheel it into the garage. It's quite heavy though, so dropping it to the ground won't help a bad back. Once on the pavement, it can be wheeled to the garage. Lifting it back into the vehicle requires some heft when doing it alone, another back-strainer, but once it's in, it pops right into place.  front seats offer a myriad of power adjustments, but i had trouble finding a comfortable setting. Lots of legroom and headroom adds to the comfort of center-seat passengers on long trips.  first- and second-row occupants get separate heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls; a third set of controls for the third seat is optional.  a curved dashboard houses instruments and controls where they can easily be reached. The eddie bauer version comes with an overhead console with a digital display that provides compass headings, date and time and average fuel economy; a switch operates power swing-out rear quarter windows. Nicely designed cruise controls are mounted on the steering wheel. The wiring around the rear-view mirror is untidy.  attractive and durable materials are used throughout the expedition's cabin. Soft-touch coverings are applied to switches and door panels. The window switches are lighted internally at night, a nice touch that not all vehicles carry. Optional adjustable pedals allow the driver to adjust the pedal cluster at the touch of a dashboard-mounted switch. Speed-sensitive variable-assist power steering works in the driver's favor by keeping steering effort low.  lots of large windows, along with big mirrors, make it easy to see in all directions. Extra care and attention is required when maneuvering in close-quarters, however, because the expedition sits tall with tall fenders. It felt far more comfortable than most pickup trucks and sport-utilities and even on many sedans when traversing the rough, cobblestone streets in the historic fan district in richmond, virginia. Vibration can be felt through the steering wheel, acceptable for a truck like this one, but not a luxury car. An advantage of the expedition's long wheelbase is a resistance to pitching over freeway expansion joints and other irregularities. When driven on back roads, the expedition does not lean unduly in corners, nor does the front end dive excessively under hard braking. Brake pedal feel is light, yet precise. The over-assisted power steering does require frequent corrections on the highway, which keeps the expedition driver busy.  an optional load-leveling system 815) uses compressed air to compensate for varying loads while improving ride quality. Built into the system is a one-inch increase in ride height, as if the expedition wasn't tall enough. AM/FM✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Climate Control✔ CD Changer✔ Air Conditioning✔ Sunroof/Moonroof

2014 ford edge review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The ford edge is a five-passenger crossover sport utility that answers the call for a roomy vehicle with utility and style. Nor is it a minivan. Yet it's more than a car. The front-, or all-wheel drive edge is powered by a 285-hp 3. 5-liter v6 engine, while the edge sport adds a 305-hp 3. 7-liter ti-vct v6; both engines use a six-speed automatic transmission, the sport adds steering wheel shift paddles. Available on the front-wheel drive se, sel and limited trims is a 237-hp 2. 0-liter ecoboost engine which boasts enhanced fuel economy. Optional safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, collision warning, blind spot detection, rear-view camera and rain sensing wipers. Myford driver connect technology manages all the information the driver needs, with minimal distraction to actually driving. For 2014, the edge carries over unchanged, but with two new paint colors. 2010 ford expedition el review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A standard among full-size suvs. introductionthe ford expedition is a full-size sport-utility vehicle. It seats up to eight people, hauls a mountain of gear, and tows moderately heavy trailers. The second- and third-row seats fold flat to create a useful rear cargo area. That's nice on long drives.  changes for 2010 are minimal. There is the mykey programmable vehicle key, the availability of the sync voice-activated communications and entertainment system, three new colors, and trailer sway control is standard. Expedition was last redesigned for 2007.  with its combination of utility, a smooth, stable ride and a pleasant interior, the ford expedition is a fine choice for families that tow or take driving vacations.  the ford expedition comes in two lengths, the standard model with a 119-inch wheelbase, and the expedition el with its 131-inch wheelbase. Every expedition is powered by a single-overhead-cam 5. 4-liter v8 rated at 310 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment. A leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel, front and rear air conditioning with rear controls, remote keyless entry, automatic headlights, alarm, an am/fm/cd stereo with mp3 player connectivity and rear controls, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, overhead console, and illuminated visors are also part of the package. Exterior standard equipment features 265/70r17 tires on alloy wheels, running boards, roof rails, fog lights, power-adjustable heated outside mirrors, a rear liftgate with flip-up glass and a rear defroster/wiper/washer system, and a keyless entry keypad.  the expedition xlt el 38,610) and xlt el 4wd 41,510) are equipped the same as standard wheelbase versions, except they come with a split-folding third-row seat and a conversation mirror.  options for xlt models include third-row bench seat 875) or power-operated third-row bench seat 1,370), leather captain's chairs 1,295), a heavy-duty towing package 395), sirius satellite radio 195), rear-seat entertainment 1,295), and a power moonroof 995). A convenience package 895) includes a reverse-sensing system, power rear quarter windows, universal garage-door opener, six-disc cd changer, and power-adjustable pedals.  the expedition eddie bauer 40,890) and eddie bauer 4wd 43,790) are trimmed as outdoor adventure vehicles and are distinguished by a longer list of convenience features as standard equipment, notably the expedition's unique power-folding split third-row seat. Other standard features include leather upholstery, 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, memory for the mirrors and driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, a premium sound system with six-disc cd changer, trip computer, conversation mirror, mirror-mounted turn signals, power-adjustable pedals, and protective cladding for the lower body panels. The eddie bauer el 43,075) and eddie bauer el 4wd 45,970) are equipped, basically, like the standard-wheelbase versions.  options for eddie bauer models over and above those of the xlt include heated and cooled front seats 625), power running boards 995), a navigation system 1,995), second-row captain's chairs 795), and air suspension 485).  the expedition limited 42,660) and limited 4wd 45,560) add heated and cooled front seats, 10-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, universal garage-door opener, power rear quarter windows, and 255/70r18 tires on chrome alloy wheels. The limited el 45,310) and limited el 4wd 48,210) are equipped the same.  the expedition king ranch 45,190) and king ranch 4wd 48,090) have upgraded chaparral leather upholstery, king ranch badging, and gold exterior accents. The leather also trims the center console lid, steering wheel and door panels, while wood trim can be found on the center console, shifter handle and instrument panel. King ranch el 47,840) and king ranch 4wd el 50,740) have the same features.  safety equipment includes front airbags, torso-protecting front side airbags, three-row head-protecting side-curtain airbags with rollover deployment, tire-pressure monitor, anti-lock brakes (abs) with brake assist, and advancetrac electronic stability control with roll stability control. A rear obstacle detection system is standard on limited and king ranch, and optional on eddie bauer. Trailer sway control is standard. walkaroundthe ford expedition is a truck and it doesn't pretend to be anything else. This is a good identity to have, because ford trucks continue to have an outstanding reputation for utility, reliability and durability.  both the long and regular-length versions of the expedition use many of the components from the ford f-150 pickup. However, the expedition features independent rear suspension, which improves driving precision, ride comfort, and rear-seat roominess.  this third-generation expedition features a three-bar grille, large headlights, and a domed hood that combine to deliver a look that's both distinctive and respectable. There are several different wheel designs, including 20-inchers with a chrome finish.  expedition el models stretch the wheelbase to 131 inches. Overall, the el measures 14. 8 inches longer than the standard expedition, and that adds 22 cubic feet of cargo volume. As a result, crowded parking lots can be challenging. The expedition has a turning circle of nearly 41 feet, while the el requires 44 feet.  they're also heavy, as even the base 2wd expedition weighs almost 6,000 pounds, and a loaded el with 4wd will be comfortably over that.  the king ranch model can be identified by its gold exterior accents and unique wheel design.  the expedition comes with running boards as standard equipment. Power retractable running boards that deploy when the doors are opened are optional. Some prefer no running boards, but that doesn't appear to be an option. interiorthe ford expedition features a rich blend of finishes, textures and color. Indeed, a king ranch is the best representation of modern american-style luxury within ford's lineup. Wood, chrome and leather make the expedition an inviting place to spend a day on the road. Leather-upholstered examples are available with a heating/cooling feature that makes them a more comfortable companion in winter and summer. Generous driver's-seat travel helps accommodate taller drivers, and it's a perfect match for the expedition's movable pedals, so a wide range of sizes of drivers can sit comfortably.  the second seating row reflects ford's thoughtful approach to passenger comfort: the standard 40/20/40 bench seat incorporates a center section that slides, bringing a child seat within easier reach of front-seat passengers. Optional second-row captain's chairs with a center-aisle pass-through can be substituted for adult-rated comfort.  packaging advantages afforded by the expedition's independent rear suspension enable the third-row seat to deliver more comfort for adults compared to the accommodations provided by the chevy tahoe. In fact, third-row room is among the best of any suv, though three adults won't want to sit in the back for long. The high ride height also makes getting in and out a task for children.  the expedition's liftgate with its flip-up glass hatch makes access to the cargo area very easy. The expedition's second- and third-row bench-type seats fold flat into the cargo floor, affording a long cargo area that can be easily loaded. In this regard, the expedition is much better designed than gm's large suvs. The expedition is also available with an optional power-folding third-row seat and electronically powered liftgate to make it even easier to load cargo. However, the seat cushions of the second- and third-row seats are a little slim in order to allow the seats to fold properly.  the expedition is about more than convenience. A dvd-based navigation system with sizable 6. 5-inch screen is available as an option. The rear-seat dvd entertainment system has an eight-inch screen that flips down from the headliner and also includes two sets of wireless headphones. A plug-in jack for an mp3 player is standard a. 2005 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. America's most popular suv. introductionfor more than a dozen years, the ford explorer has been the best-selling suv in america. In fact, it's the sixth best-selling vehicle. It's become the standard-issue suburban family hauler. Though capable as a tow vehicle and able to venture off the highway, most explorers spend their lives shuttling people, collecting groceries and performing the duties station wagons performed when baby boomers were growing up. The explorer answers this call admirably and comfortably, and that's a big part of the reason it's so popular.  the explorer is roomy and comfortable. It can seat seven people when equipped with the optional third-row seat, which folds flat into the cargo floor when not needed. Part of the reason for this is a superb five-speed automatic transmission. Explorer's wide track and long wheelbase give it a solid, stable stance, while its independent rear suspension (an unusual feature in a mid-to-large-size suv) gives it a smoother ride and better handling than suvs with traditional live rear axles.  safety features abound. Advancetrac with roll stability control is now standard on all explorers. This sophisticated system not only senses and corrects potential skids and slides, but also monitors for potential rollovers. We recommend the optional safety canopy airbags, which are designed to provide some protection in the event of a rollover. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are also standard, and a tire pressure monitor comes on all but the base model.  the explorer is rated to pull trailers up to 7,140 pounds when properly equipped, and though it does not excel at off-road travel, it can go most of the places most of us need to go. lineupthe 2005 ford explorer is available in six trim levels: xls, xls sport, xlt, xlt sport, eddie bauer, and limited.    an overhead-cam v6 engine is standard on all models. An overhead-cam v8 800) is an option for all models except the xls. All explorers come with a five-speed automatic transmission. Xls sport 2wd 28,260) and 4wd 30,490) add the tire-pressure monitoring system, 16-inch aluminum wheels, black step bars and wheel-lip moldings, an upgraded center console and floor mats.  xlt 2wd 29,650) and 4wd 31,875) get approach lamps in the side mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a six-way power driver's seat, lumbar adjustment for both driver and passenger, an overhead console with outside-temperature indicator and compass, and warm steel accents for the center stack. Outside, a monochromatic treatment with chrome grille and fog lamps sets xlt apart. The limited 2wd 34,580) and 4wd 36,805) come with all the eddie bauer goodies, but a somewhat different look, thanks to chromed wheels and roof rails outside and higher-grade single-tone leather inside, with madarin teak accents.  all but xls can be ordered with third-row seating 745), auxiliary rear-compartment air conditioning 650), reverse-sensing system 255), power moonroof 850), and a dvd entertainment system 1,295). A trailer towing prep package 150) replaces the standard class ii hitch with a class iii/iv hitch and adds a 3. 73 (rather than 3. 55) limited-slip rear axle and seven-wire trailer harness.  second-row bucket seats with an extended floor console are available 795) on eddie bauer and limited. An off-road package 385) for xls and xlt consists of skid plates, tow hooks, off-road suspension and all-terrain tires.  the optional safety canopy air curtain system 560) is designed to help protect first- and second-row outboard occupants during side-impacts or rollovers, and is designed to improve rollover protection by staying inflated for a longer period. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly recommend this option. walkaroundwith its wheels pushed out toward the corners, the ford explorer looks stable and comfortable. Though ubiquitous, it is a handsome, good-looking vehicle. Front and rear fascia are smoothly integrated, while jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Various combinations of bright, blacked-out, color-contrasting or color-coodinated trim distinguish the xls from the xlt from the bauer from the limited. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but it continues to be a popular feature among loyal ford owners. interiorthe explorer is a comfortable vehicle, even on long trips. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm, and supportive, with lots of adjustments. The same held true for the leather seats in the eddie bauer model.  adjustable pedals, a tilt steering wheel, and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubbies with rubber mats provide space for a wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keeps odds and ends in check. The interior door handles seemed a bit awkward at first, but that went away with familiarization. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but wouldn't accommodate the one-liter size. The front power outlet was positioned well for a cell phone, but like most, was a reach for a radar detector. The trip computer came in handy, calculating the distance to an empty fuel tank. The optional six-disc in-dash cd player sounds good and is easy to operate, with large, clearly marked controls.  the second row of seats is quite comfortable. Many people prefer the second-row bucket seats available on eddie bauer and limited, which are more comfortable but only accommodate two passengers.  seatbelts use retractors and pre-tensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. The second-row center seat has an integrated shoulder belt, a feature not found on all suvs. All occupants should always wear their seat belts as they are the first line of defense in an accident.  third-row seating is available. In fact, the decision to add third-row seating drove the design and engineering of the current explorer. As a result, ford has done an excellent job of making the third row as roomy as possible, while also making it fold quickly into the floor when it isn't needed. It isn't comfortable for an adult. Head, hip, and leg room in the explorer's third row measure 38. 9, 45. 4, and 34. 9 inches, respectively, versus the envoy xl's 38. 5, 45. 9, and 31. 2. Yet the explorer rides on a relatively handy 113. 7 inch wheelbase, vs. The awkward 129 inches of the extended trailblazer and envoy. It is a tribute to the clever design of ex.
