2002 mercury mountaineer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New styling, new engines, new independent suspension. introductionmercury has been trying to find its identity since 1939. The new mountaineer is leading the way toward that goal and represents the future design direction for mercury. Though it still shares all major mechanical components with the ford explorer, the mercury mountaineer this time around has made a major design break with the ford version. Mercury chooses not to use the usual model names.  the 2wd v6 retails for $28,730; the awd v6 lists for $30,710. The v8 is a $695 option. No manual transmission is available, so all models come with a new and improved wide-ratio five-speed overdrive automatic transmission.  while all previous mountaineer models were five-passenger suvs, from now on, all will be seven-passenger models, using a third seat that folds completely flat to make room at the rear for larger cargos.  all mountaineers are built to a relatively high specification, with power windows, mirrors and locks, anti-lock brakes, and a class ii receiver hitch for towing. All have the securilock passive anti-theft system and remote keyless entry system, and approach lamps on the bottoms of the side mirrors that illuminate the sides of the vehicle when the key fob button is pressed. Leather-trimmed bucket seats are available as a standalone option with a six-way power driver's seat and dual manual lumbar support for $655. The power moonroof is $800, the neat crosshatched running boards are $395, the convenience group of automatic headlamps, approach lamps, illuminated visor mirrors and homelink is $476. A reverse sensing system that uses sonar to spot objects the driver may not see is $255. An audiophile sound system with in-dash 6 cd changer is $690, and side-curtain air bags that cover almost 65 percent of the side glass area and have a rollover trigger are $495. A class iii/iv towing package for up to 7300 pounds costs $395. A 3. 55 axle ratio is standard on mountaineer, but a 3. 73 axle ratio with limited slip differential is standard with the class iii/iv towing package. walkaroundto walk around the 2002 mountaineer is to take more steps, because it is longer and wider than the previous model to accommodate both the third seat and the new independent rear suspension system. With gray plastic and gray leather to bounce off, the aluminum trim looks terrific. The aluminum trim extends to the main gauges, the tachometer and speedometer, which are done in black-on-white graphics that turn orange-and-white when the lights are on. It takes only a couple of rides to be able to find everything quickly and easily. The front bucket seats are very good, long, thick and comfortable. Optional seat heaters warm the seats quickly, but the buttons are mounted on the side of the seat and can be difficult to find, grouped with the seatback recliner handle, the power seat switch for fore/aft and the lumbar pump switch.  the second and third row seats are very easy to stow. Folding them away reveals a huge 81 cubic-foot cargo bay. All-wheel drive contributes to the mountaineer's handling characteristics because it sends torque to the front and rear tires during normal operation. The mountaineer's system biases torque 35 percent to the front and 65 percent to the rear to minimize understeer. (understeer is when the front tires slip before the rear tires, causing vehicle to push toward the outside of a turn.) the all-wheel-drive system has no switches or levers and needs no driver intervention. There's no low range for serious off-roading, but snow, rain, mud, wet leaves, ice or gravel on the road are no problem. Mountaineer's all-wheel-drive system uses an open differential design with a viscous coupling. Another bonus of the rear suspension is the bigger, flatter load floor and the third seat. Without it, both would be impossible. It's very confidence-inspiring.  a new rack-and-pinion steering system makes the mountaineer much less prone to wandering on the highway than the old steering system. summarythe mercury mountaineer awd starts out at a reasonable $30,710, but options can take it over $37,000. 2001 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Nothing could be farther from the truth. It got a complete redesign in 1999 that brought a roomier, more comfortable cabin and smoother engines, which helped it win a host of industry accolades. Decent around-town comfort combined with dirt-track-worthy underpinnings have helped it maintain its place in the hearts of loyal customers. lineuptwo trim levels are available, laredo and limited. Retail prices: laredo 2wd 27,300); laredo 4wd 29,270); limited 2wd 32,665) limited 4wd 35,095).  both trim levels offer a long list of standard features, including air conditioning, anti-lock brakes, power windows, doors and mirrors, and cruise control. For 2001, laredo gets an appearance package that includes leather seats, fog lamps and 17-inch alloy wheels. Limited adds automatic climate control, heated mirrors, 10-way power seats with mirror memory, and an infinity 180-watt am/fm/cassette stereo system with cd.  two engines are offered. Standard equipment is jeep's 4. 0-liter inline-6, which was re-engineered for 1999. It's quieter, cleaner and more powerful, producing 195 horsepower. Optional is a 235-horsepower 4. 7-liter overhead-cam v8 that was introduced last year. The five-speed carries a second overdrive ratio for better highway fuel economy.  grand cherokees come standard with rear-wheel drive, but that seems like buying a louisville slugger just to hit rocks. There's no mistaking it for something else. The current model is three inches longer than pre-1999 versions but rides on the same wheelbase. Slightly rounded edges and a subtle bulge to the roofline have done nothing to mar an instantly recognizable shape. interiorthe front seats are comfortable, with thickly padded longitudinal ribs, but they seem a bit cushy for serious off-road driving. Climbing into the back seats is much easier than before, however, because the rear doors are wider.  more space is available for cargo because the spare tire was moved from its upright position on the left rear side of the cargo compartment to lie down under the load floor. Part of that impression comes from the high seating position. Controls and switches, including the jeep's once-balky turn signal/wiper combination stalk, have been improved in feel and operation. One reason the spare was relocated to under the load floor was to give more visibility rearward. This view was formerly blind because that's where the spare used to be. driving impressionjeep's grand cherokee drives like a truck, with a tall, body-rolling ride. Off-road, or driving down a bumpy, rutted rural lane, it feels controlled and steady. There's no need to slow down for rough railroad crossings in the grand cherokee.  underneath, the grand cherokee still sits atop live axles. The trend among competing sport-utilities is to use independent suspensions for better highway performance. But the jeep's live axle is only a drawback on paper. The jeep retains its unitbody integrated truck frame-and-body design. This unusual design strategy - also used by the smaller jeep cherokee and the nissan pathfinder - results in a platform that is lighter and more rigid than it would be using more traditional designs. With adjustments for similar equipment, jeep says the new grand cherokee is about 50 pounds lighter overall. Less weight and a tighter turning radius help make the grand cherokee more maneuverable.  steering is quick but isolated, despite a thorough restructuring of the front engine cradle and front suspension and steering component mounts. But that's the same for all of the top-selling sport-utilities. Like them, the jeep is still a truck, sitting tall, rolling side-to-side in corners and high winds.  the biggest improvement in the ride of the grand cherokee is a newfound tendency to stay pointed straight ahead. A triangle link that replaces the panhard rod locating the rear axle is directly responsible for this improvement. Careful tuning of suspension and drivetrain mounts allows the live axles of the jeep a lot of compliant movement. The axles move and pivot on large bumps and dirt holes where the independent suspensions of other suvs reach their limits of travel and ultimately toss about the occupants inside.  with the 4. 7-liter v8, the grand cherokee accelerates smoothly, with none of the mechanical grumbling and roaring of the previous engines. With single overhead cams on each cylinder bank, the 4. 7-liter v8 produces 235 horsepower. Hurrying up a mountain or around weekend-warrior crazies is a breeze with the higher second gear.  grand cherokees with the six-cylinder engine come with jeep's renowned selec-trac system. This works well in heavy rainstorms or in the winter when roads are partially covered by snow and ice. Quadra-drive is the same system as quadra-trac ii, but it adds hydraulically locking front and rear differentials. By using three differentials, the system automatically sends torque front-to-rear and side-to-side whenever a wheel slips. It serves as a good suburban vehicle.  but it also tracks like daniel boone through the backcountry, and jeep claims that many of its customers use their vehicles for that purpose. Indeed, only land rovers and toyotas can compete with jeep when it comes to trail running. When the going gets rough, the jeep grand cherokee is a high-quality tool that delivers. model lineuplaredo 2wd 27,300); laredo 4wd 29,270); limited 2wd 32,665) limited 4wd 35,095). assembled indetroit, michigan. options as tested4. 7-liter v-8 engine 1,560); full-size spare tire and matching wheel 160); sienna pearl coat paint 200); quadra-drive 4wd 550). model testedlimited 4wd 35,095). 2001 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Flexible seating arrangements give families versatility. The third row is cramped for all but smaller children. Expedition's soft suspension filters out unwanted road vibration, and softens potholes, driveway entrances and other bumps. Its 5. 4-liter v8 delivers responsive acceleration performance, while the automatic transmission provides impressively smooth shifting. Power steering is over-assisted to ease maneuvering in crowded parking lots, and a reverse warning system reduces the chance of backing into something. lineuptwo trim levels, xlt and eddie bauer, make up the expedition model range. With little demand for plain, entry-level vehicles in this class, ford equips the xlt well and the eddie bauer even better. Standard equipment for both models includes antilock brakes, third-row seating, and remote keyless entry. Visual differences between xlt and eddie bauer versions are confined to paint and trim. The expedition derives much of its chassis and mechanical hardware from ford's f-150 pickup.  xlt comes standard with a 232-horsepower 4. 6-liter v8.  stepping up to the eddie bauer 4x4 model brings a larger, more powerful 5. 4-liter v8 that produces 260 horsepower. Eddie bauer also adds a power moonroof, leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 290-watt mach am/fm cassette audio system, a 6-cd changer in the center console, and automatic climate control. A tv/vhs rear-seat entertainment system is a new option for the top-level expedition. walkaroundexpedition borrows the best styling elements from the f-150. From nose to windshield, the expedition shares sheet metal with the ford's best-selling pickup.  even though the expedition debuted in 1997, it has aged well. It's still handsome, with a sloping hoodline and rounded front end that reflect attention to aerodynamics. It's a design that pays off with improved fuel efficiency and reduced wind noise. As a matter of necessity, the sides and back are shaped more for utility than style, which look similar to the 2001 explorer. Clever use of trim and rounded corners add eye appeal.  stretching more than 17 feet from nose to tail, the expedition is big. Twisting it counterclockwise opens the rear liftgate for better access and bigger load jobs. The load height is a bit high on the expedition, however. A windstar minivan is far better in this regard.  lights on the running boards make climbing aboard easier on dark and stormy nights. Hefty front tow hooks facilitate yanking for those who stray too far into the muck. interiorexpedition's interior is big and comfortable. Climbing in and out is a chore, however, with the tall ride height. Women wearing nice dresses often struggle to climb up, something that's impossible to do gracefully. Expedition can carry up to nine people, when equipped with bench seats at all three locations. A more comfortable arrangement is six passengers, two in each row.  optional captain's chairs in the second row 795), give rear-seat passengers a more luxurious experience. The downside is that the space between them is still there when the third-row bench is removed and the rear seats are folded down; this can present a hazard for a big dog because it can step or fall into the well between the seats, so it's better to have the center seats folded up for this situation.  the available third-row bench provides seating for two more passengers, but it's cramped back there. Once back there, there's no headroom and legroom is cramped. It's best reserved for children who have grown out of booster seats, but haven't grown to adult heights.  the third-row bench can be folded up: flip the lever, fold the seatback down, grab the floor lever and lift up. A kickstand secures it in the up position. This is a good solution when carrying cargo, but it isn't a friendly place for a dog because of all the hardware sticking out of the exposed seat bottom.  a better option is to yank the third row out and wheel it into the garage. It's quite heavy though, so dropping it to the ground won't help a bad back. Once on the pavement, it can be wheeled to the garage. Lifting it back into the vehicle requires some heft when doing it alone, another back-strainer, but once it's in, it pops right into place.  front seats offer a myriad of power adjustments, but i had trouble finding a comfortable setting. Lots of legroom and headroom adds to the comfort of center-seat passengers on long trips.  first- and second-row occupants get separate heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls; a third set of controls for the third seat is optional.  a curved dashboard houses instruments and controls where they can easily be reached. The eddie bauer version comes with an overhead console with a digital display that provides compass headings, date and time and average fuel economy; a switch operates power swing-out rear quarter windows. Nicely designed cruise controls are mounted on the steering wheel. The wiring around the rear-view mirror is untidy.  attractive and durable materials are used throughout the expedition's cabin. Soft-touch coverings are applied to switches and door panels. The window switches are lighted internally at night, a nice touch that not all vehicles carry. Optional adjustable pedals allow the driver to adjust the pedal cluster at the touch of a dashboard-mounted switch. Speed-sensitive variable-assist power steering works in the driver's favor by keeping steering effort low.  lots of large windows, along with big mirrors, make it easy to see in all directions. Extra care and attention is required when maneuvering in close-quarters, however, because the expedition sits tall with tall fenders. It felt far more comfortable than most pickup trucks and sport-utilities and even on many sedans when traversing the rough, cobblestone streets in the historic fan district in richmond, virginia. Vibration can be felt through the steering wheel, acceptable for a truck like this one, but not a luxury car. An advantage of the expedition's long wheelbase is a resistance to pitching over freeway expansion joints and other irregularities. When driven on back roads, the expedition does not lean unduly in corners, nor does the front end dive excessively under hard braking. Brake pedal feel is light, yet precise. The over-assisted power steering does require frequent corrections on the highway, which keeps the expedition driver busy.  an optional load-leveling system 815) uses compressed air to compensate for varying loads while improving ride quality. Built into the system is a one-inch increase in ride height, as if the expedition wasn't tall enough. AM/FM✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Climate Control✔ CD Changer✔ Air Conditioning✔ Sunroof/Moonroof

2003 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The modern american wagon. introductionthe ford explorer is one of the best sport-utilities in its class. A stiffer frame and a fully independent suspension provide superior ride and handling on road and off road. Its v6 was revised last year and a v8 was added as an option. Both are available with a superb five-speed automatic. It's roomy, capable of seating seven people when equipped with the optional third row that folds flat into the cargo floor when not being used.  for 2003, ford added more standard equipment and important new options. Xls and xlt come standard with cloth upholstery; eddie bauer and limited come trimmed in leather.  an overhead-cam v6 engine is standard on all models. An overhead-cam v8 800) is an option for all models except the xls. Ford's new five-speed automatic transmission 1095) is optional and we highly recommend it. Xls comes a high level of standard equipment, including a new am/fm/cassette/cd stereo, but it does not offer some of the high-zoot options available on the other models, including the v8. An $1150 sport group for the xls adds the premium center console, step bars, body-color metallic wheel lip moldings, and 16-inch aluminum wheels.  xlt 28,745) gets nicer sport cloth upholstery, a six-way power driver's seat, body-colored exterior trim, and more luxury features, such as a temperature gauge and compass, map lights and dome lights, outside approach lighting, extra power outlets, and an illuminated keypad for keyless entry. The five-speed automatic transmission is standard, and aluminum alloy wheels replace steel wheels. New for 2003 are a chrome grille and black-grain outside door handles. Leather upholstery with a six-way power driver's seat is available for $655. Six-way adjustable heated power seats with dual manual lumbar supports are used in front, and the driver's seat has a three-position memory feature. The top two explorer models differ only in their distinctive trim: eddie bauer comes with arizona beige bumpers, moldings, lower bodyside cladding, satin-nickel wheels and grille, and p245/65r17 all-terrain tires. Limited uses monochromatic bumpers, moldings and cladding with a silver grille and unique wheels; the limited model is available in white pearl-coat paint with frost accents.  options for all models except xls include third-row seating 670), auxiliary air conditioning 610), running boards 395), power adjustable pedals 120), reverse sensing system 255), and power moonroof 800). The canopy also promises improved side-impact protection by staying inflated for a much longer period of time. Ford has done a great deal of research on this technology and we strongly recommend ordering the safety canopy. Dual front airbags are standard, and feature smart technology that adjusts their inflation rate according to the severity of the accident. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are standard on all models; abs allows the driver to brake and steer at the same time in a panic stop. Seatbelts use retractors and pre-tensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. This newest explorer achieved a 4-star driver/5-star front-passenger ratings in the government's national highway traffic safety administration front crash tests. walkaroundthe current ford explorer is the same length overall as the pre-2002 models, but it rides on a longer wheelbase (by 2 inches) and a much wider track. Pushing the wheels out toward the corners makes the explorer more stable and more comfortable. All new last year, this explorer shares only its name with the pre-2002 models involved in the firestone tire recall.  the explorer's styling is fresh, contemporary. It looks solid and handsome. Smoothly integrated front and rear fascia are used in place of the traditional bumper treatments. Jeweled headlamps and tail lamps give it a sophisticated look. Yet this newly designed explorer clearly evokes the previous-generation explorer. No one will have trouble identifying it. Few will notice it at all. I dropped something next to the curb while getting out of the explorer one dark night; hitting the button on the key fob illuminated the approach lights and i immediately spotted it. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. The keypad doesn't improve the appearance of the explorer, but ford says it's a popular feature among loyal owners.  the standard roof rack is designed to support up to 200 pounds. For messier cargo, there's a new nbx package 1110), which includes a yakima multi-use loadwarrior cargo basket, special black exterior trim, special seat cloth, and 17-inch machined aluminum wheels mounted with b. Goodrich rugged trail t/a p245/65r17 tires. interiorthe ford explorer is a comfortable vehicle on long trips. Convenience features abound that make it pleasant while driving and when stopping. The eddie bauer model comes with the traditional beige steering wheel and pinhole leather seating material. Handsome gray wood accents lend a luxurious appearance. Light-colored trim on the inside a-pillars and grab handle add to a light, airy atmosphere. It's a successful execution, though the mouse-fur roof liner is nothing to write home about. We found the cloth seats in the xlt comfortable, firm and supportive, with lots of adjustments.  adjustable pedals, a telescoping steering wheel and long seat travel help the explorer fit a wide variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning, something few manufacturers get right. Nicely designed cubby holes with rubber mats provide space for wallet, sunglasses, a pen, cans, and bottles. A relatively large center console keep odds and ends in check. Interior door handles seem a bit awkward at first, but that went away with familiarization. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but wouldn't accommodate my one-liter bottle from poland springs. The front power outlet was positioned well for a cell phone, but like most, was a bit of a reach for a radar detector. The trip computer came in handy, calculating the distance to an empty fuel tank.  the front seats are comfortable. They are wider and offer more fore-and-aft travel than before. Seat heaters are part of the eddie bauer way of living. But the buttons that control them are mounted on the sides of seats, which is a bit awkward. Reaching down to the side of the driver's seat, the left hand is confronted with an array of seat adjusters; finding and pressing the seat-heater button is a challenge. Likewise, it isn't always easy to find the height adjuster. But rake is easy to adjust, and there's a knob on the up-level seats for cranking in some lumbar support.  the second row of seats, the row we recommend for those who didn't get to drive or sit up front, is quite comfortable. 2007 dodge grand caravan review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The grand caravan comes in two trims: se and sxt. It can carry up to seven passengers and features the stow 'n go seating system, the optional system features second-row and third-row seats that flip down into the floor. The se is similarly equipped to the caravan se. But it's powered by the 3. 3-liter v6 engine, and comes with more sophisticated airbags with occupant classification system and a driver's side inflatable knee blocker. The sxt is powered by a 3. 8-liter v6 and comes standard with stow 'n go. The dodge grand caravan is a carryover from 2006.

1998 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The trendiest of the trucks. introductionford's f-series pickups are proof that barnyard workhorse trucks will never be their squared-off selves again. Wheelbase lengths of 119. 9 in., 138. 5 in. Wheelbase, which means all f-250s are either extended cabs or long cargo beds. But, by and large, there ought to be something here for just about anybody. The xlt trim includes several items that might otherwise be options. The total for this high-line truck came to $31,450. In smoothness, it embarrasses every other full-size truck engine on the market. The power delivery is crisp and responsive, and to good low-end power it adds excellent mid-range and higher-speed power to make short work of real-world demands such as quick acceleration to freeway speeds. It replaces the ancient twin i-beam, and we're thankful. With this suspension, the ride is far better, handling is superior, steering feel is drastically improved and directional stability, such as when traveling at highway speeds in a severe crosswind, is immensely enhanced. We would expect that tire wear would also be better, as this was one of the many weak points of the twin i-beam. With the 40/60 split-bench front seat, driver and passenger have individually reclining backrests. What can serve as the center backrest is also a folding armrest; when folded forward, it provides a large cupholder and capacious bin. Inside this storage bin are places for coins, cassette tapes and so forth, and a divider which, when removed, allows space for an 8 1/2 x 11 tablet. There are a pair of cupholders in the instrument panel, and a goodly number of the expected storage compartments and map pockets here and there  the view outward is superb, as the f-series styling includes a low beltline and big windows all around. Even fairly short drivers should have decent forward visibility. The only vision-related gripe we had was a vertically narrow inside rear-view mirror, which cut down on the view to the rear  all supercabs include a third door on the passenger's side for entry to the back seat. This door is operable once the passenger's door is open, and can be opened from inside or out. Two adults should be reasonably comfortable on longer trips in the back seat. With the rear seat folded forward there's a flat, sturdy steel surface, great for carrying toolboxes or large amounts of luggage. driving impressionpeople familiar with trucks, particularly those familiar with ford trucks, will find the driving experience in the new f-series greatly enhanced. A high degree of directional stability adds to safety and comfort because it keeps the vehicle headed down its intended path  ride, too, is remarkably good. One big problem with pickup trucks has always been how poorly they tend to ride when empty; this can become really annoying on long trips down concrete interstates where trucks can bounce ceaselessly. There's no truck-like roar or rumble, no feeling that it starts thrashing at higher speeds. Whether driving around the city or taking an extended highway cruise, the 5. 4-liter triton engine is the most velvety full-size pickup truck engine we've encountered. The smaller, 4. 6-liter version is equally smooth, but it's less powerful, and we highly recommend the stronger 5. 4-liter v8. But the ford is certainly the sleekest of the bunch  there's a lot to like about it in addition to the look. The interior is extraordinary, the triton v8s are silky and strong, the ride and drive is exceptional and it's full to the brim with worthwhile features. 2001 pontiac montana review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It really is better in montana. introductionpontiac advertising seems to suggest that montana is something more exciting and adventurous than the standard-issue suburban minivan. The truth is, the montana differs only in detail from minivans offered by chevrolet and oldsmobile. Those things alone relate to a better driving experience.  for another, montana is really quite handsome by minivan standards, especially with the new and neater front bumper and grille it has acquired for 2001. The base-level, short-wheelbase van comes with six bucket seats, but can also be configured for seven passsengers, with two buckets up front, two captain's chairs in the middle, and a three-person 50/50 split bench seat in the rear. Or trade the split bench for a fully stowable bench. Even eight-passenger seating is available, with three modular bucket seats in the second row and the stowable bench in the third. Extended-length models offer the same configurations again, minus the six-bucket style and plus a second eight-passenger variation with the split bench rather than the stowable in the extreme rear.  the montanavision video entertainment system comes only as part of the top two option packages on the extended-wheelbase model. So, effectively, montanvision prices begin at $31,275.  all models get two sliding rear doors as standard equipment; a power-operated curbside door comes with most long-wheelbase trim levels. Onstar is standard on all models. The engine sits in the usual sideways position, which allows maximum use of interior space. The suspension is independent up front, with a twist-beam axle in the rear; again like the olds and chevy minivans. The twist-beam axle is simpler than an independent setup, but nearly as light, and contributes much-needed rear roll stiffness in a front-heavy vehicle. interiorthe standard bucket seats fold and remove easily. The fore-and-aft range of the driver's seat is one of the longest we've sampled, and will probably make room for plus-six-and-a-half-footers. There are large side bolsters on the backs of the seats, but the seating surface is relatively flat. However, when the speedometer needle reaches 75 mph, it blocks the right turn-signal indicator. It still folds down from the ceiling where the front-seat occupants can't see it, a legal requirement. Separate controls allow mid and rear-seat passengers to adjust the volume on individual headphones, and to regulate heating and cooling in their area. All of this equipment will keep rear-seaters busy and entertained. What we like best about this system is its integration. Aftermarket systems we've tried tend to be more difficult to use and not as durable. driving impressionwhatever pontiac wants it to be, montana is the perfect family truckster. Cross winds won't make it wander on the way to wally world. Veer off onto poorly maintained secondary roads and the suspension doesn't get upset. The noise from the powerplant is limited to an isolated and distant hissing. At 80 mph, which we found to be the average cruising speed on most western highways marked at a 75 mph limit, the engine is revving at just 2400 rpm. The montana doesn't sound like it's straining to keep up, and passing slower cars can be done without too much prior planning.  the v6 engine has good throttle response in traffic, and it's efficient; we managed 25 mpg on a fast trip across the state. The epa estimates highway fuel economy at 26 mpg. Traction control is optional; and it's a good idea for easier control in winter driving. With a torque-pumping v6 and front-wheel drive, torque steer is sometimes noticeable as a slight tug on the steering wheel under hard acceleration.  the brake pedal is typically spongy, as it is on most gm platforms that were designed in the early 1990s. Newer designs, such as the latest bonneville and gm's newest big pickups and suvs, lack this mushy feeling, so the montana will likely get a better-feeling brake pedal in the future. The montana was also the favorite of women responding to good housekeeping's latest driving survey.  the montana is the most appealing of the three gm minivans to us, and that's just because we prefer the ducks unlimited-style colors, the stickier tires and the '99 bonneville sports sedan steering wheel. It handles rough roads without any ungainly bouncing around. And it still has all the bins and cubbies of the oldsmobile and chevy versions.  montana feels smaller than the big new honda odyssey, faster than the new mazda mpv, but it's not as quick as the latest mercury villager or dodge caravan. Stocked as it is with a lot of lookalike vehicles, we think there's plenty of room in the minivan market for montana. model lineupregular length 24,180), extended length 26,520). assembled indoraville, georgia. options as testedoption package 1sj 5,625) includes montanavision video system, am/fm/cassette/cd stereo with equalizer and coaxial speakers, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, separate rear-seat audio controls, driver information center, rear air conditioning, illuminated visor mirrors, six-way power driver's seat, traction control, silver painted alloy wheels, automatic leveling, sport suspension, power right-side sliding door, universal garage-door opener, parking aid, saddlebag storage, theft-deterrent system; leather seating surfaces 1,175). model testedmontana extended length 26,250).
