2008 jeep wrangler review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Unstoppable off road, livable on road. introductionfew vehicles are better off road than a jeep wrangler the wrangler is an icon and it can deliver inimitable fun.  the wrangler was redesigned for the 2007 model year. It's much more comfortable and convenient, offering more cargo and back-seat passenger space.  after its 2007 redesign, the wrangler gets only minor changes for 2008. It adds the sunrider top; yes essentials cloth upholstery; height-adjustable driver's seat; air conditioning; cruise control; fog lamps; 368-watt infinity sound system with six speakers and subwoofer; leather-wrapped steering wheel; tow hooks; fog lamps; compass; outside temperature indicator; body-colored fender flares; tubular side steps; heavy-duty suspension; tinted windows; and p255/70r18 goodyear wrangler all-terrain tires on aluminum wheels.  options include many of the x options, plus options jeep's mygig multimedia infotainment system with 20-gigabyte hard drive and navigation system 1,275) and remote engine starting 185).  the rubicon 27,220) is the model for serious off-roading. To the x model, the wrangler rubicon adds amenities such as air conditioning, leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, height-adjustable driver's seat, floormats, compass, outside temperature indicator, and a 368-watt infinity sound system with six speakers and subwoofer. The '07 redesign retained its traditional look. The upright fold-down windshield is slightly curved for better aerodynamics and reduced wind noise.  identifying a wrangler unlimited is easy: just count the doors. The bumpers, step assists and fender flares are all sturdy, flat-black plastic on the x.  the standard soft top is relatively easy to remove and install. The sunrider soft top slides back half way, like a huge sunroof over the front seats. The optional three-piece modular hardtop (freedom top) has two front panels that easily pop on and off like a t-top, and can be stored behind the rear seat. The third panel over the rear seat can be removed separately and stored in the garage. The freedom top yields a total of six open-air possibilities.  under the body, there's a boxed frame with seven cross members. Wide spaced frame rails cradle the fuel tank between the wheels. Three skid plates protect the fuel tank, transfer case and automatic transmission oil pan. interiorwranglers have traditionally been known as cramped inside. The current jeep wrangler two-door is a lot roomier inside than pre-2007 models, thanks to its increased width. The comfortable high-back front seats, using a handsome stain-resistant gray or khaki-colored fabric in the sahara and rubicon, offer 5. 1 inches more shoulder room and 4. 6 inches more hip room than previous-generation models. The removable rear seat provides 3. 9 inches more shoulder room, 1. 6 inches more hip room and 1 inch more leg room for each of the two passengers. Jeep claims that's more cargo space than the toyota fj cruiser, hummer h3, or nissan xterra offer. The headrests flip back, so they don't need to be removed, making it easy to switch between cargo and back-seat passenger modes. That huge difference is because in the regular wrangler, the rear passengers sit directly over the axle and between the wheel wells; in the unlimited, the axle is located behind them. The instruments, including the optional compass and temperature gauges, are easy to read, and the controls are soothingly simple. The solid square buttons look good and are easy to understand and operate. The materials are made of sturdy plastic that works well in the utilitarian wrangler.  the 368-watt infinity sound system comes with seven speakers, including a subwoofer. That's a lot of speakers for a jeep, but we think this is a good thing. It comes with sirius satellite radio, good for keeping up with the news when out in the boonies. Located under the sound system controls are big climate control knobs, with buttons for available power windows above that.  jeep's mygig multimedia infotainment system comes with a 6. 5-inch touch screen, a 20-gigabyte hard drive and a navigation system with voice control and real-time traffic information. The hard drive holds songs, pictures and navigation map information. Cds can be ripped right to the hard drive, and songs and pictures can be transferred via a usb port. A gracenotes database sorts songs by artist, track and song title. The locking glove box is pretty big and there's a convenient grab handle above it. This is a jeep, after all, so the grab handle will be used in the bouncy bits.  the modular freedom top for the unlimited features sections above each passenger that easily lift off after twisting a fastener. These sections can be stored behind the rear seat. The larger section over the rear sea. 2011 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, with silky new v6 and taut suspension. introductioneverything about the 2011 jeep grand cherokee is new and excellent, including a lowered price. There's a new dohc v6 that's smooth and powerful, making 290 horsepower and getting 16-23 mpg. There's a new super-stiff chassis with well-tuned independent front and rear suspensions that provide a comfortable ride on any surface, with solid and secure cornering. It's 3 inches wider for better handling and more hip room, with a wheelbase that's increased by 5 inches while overall length is only increased 1. 8 inches, thanks to a reduced front overhang.  the interior is stylish and made with high quality materials, especially the leather seats in the laredo models. Nothing is missed in the standard safety equipment.  the standard engine is a sweet new 3. 6-liter v6 with double overhead-cams making 290 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. The big 5. 7-liter v8 hemi is still an option for all models. The 4x4 v6 uses a single-speed transfer case, while the 4x4 v8 uses a two-speed transfer case with selec-terrain and hill descent control. There are three levels of 4wd capability. Quadra-trac i is a full-time system with a single-speed transfer case and 48-52 front-rear transfer. Quadra-trac ii uses a two-speed transfer case and electronic sensors that distribute the torque according to tire slippage, up to 60 percent to front or rear wheels. Quadra-drive ii is available with an electronic limited-slip rear differential. Additionally, a traction control system called selec-terrain is standard with quadra-trac ii and quadra-drive ii; it allows the driver to set the for five different terrain situations. Normal, sport, snow, sand/mud, and rock. Laredo x 4,000) upgrades to leather seating, heated front seats, 18-inch aluminum wheels, nine-speaker 506-watt cd/dvd/hdd/mp3 audio, rearview camera, hands-free communication, 115-volt power outlet, and remote starting.  grand cherokee limited 36,320) and 4wd 38,820) add heated rear seats, bi-xenon headlamps with auto leveling, dual-pane panoramic sunroof with power shade, navigation, rain-sensitive windshield wipers. Also touches of brightness like: silver strakes in rear cargo area, door sill scuff pads with bright insert and jeep logo, body-colored fascias with bright insert, bright door handles, bright exhaust tip. The v8 1,495) is optional.  grand cherokee overland 38,715) and 4wd 41,120) feature an air suspension system and nappa leather seating with piping, ventilated front seats, wood and leather heated steering wheel with memory, cargo net, power liftgate, premium audio with navigation and sirius travel-traffic information, 20-inch aluminum wheels. The v8 1,495) is optional.  safety equipment includes electronic stability control, electronic roll mitigation, abs with brake traction control system, trailer sway control, hill start assist, hill descent control, frontal airbags, front side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, active head restraints, and tire pressure monitor.  options include uconnect media center, flo tv, rear-seat entertainment system, sirius backseat tv, sirius xm satellite radio, uconnect web, uconnect navigation, and uconnect phone.  note: all prices are manufacturer's suggested retail prices (msrp) as of may 12, 2010, which may change without notice at any time. Prices do not include destination charges. walkaroundevery inch of sheetmetal is new, although it's still so unmistakably grand cherokee that it's not going to turn heads. Few will say, wow, look at that new jeep, although they probably should, because it's so much cleaner. This brings better economy, with less interior noise. It has a wider stance and shorter nose with less front overhang, giving it a subtle look of substance. It's a fast windshield, meaning more sloped than before.  and it definitely has substance, being longer and heavier, stretched in the wheelbase by 5. 3 inches, although it's only 1. 8 inches longer overall thanks to less front overhang. It's also 3 inches wider, for better handling and more interior space.  the seven-slot chrome grille is defined by six chrome slats over the black slots, while the headlamps sweep like winglets out from the top corners. Smooth frontal fascia with black airdam, recessed to lessen drag, and tidy small foglamps in trapezoid pockets. Aerodynamic bellypans run the full length of the chassis, chasing fuel mileage.  the sides have big rectangular concave sculpting, as if it's a place where jeep meets bmw, and slightly trapezoidal wheel arches, a distinctive if still subtle touch. The side glass is straight and unaffected, with black b pillars, darkly tinted glass and stainless steel trim. Cool.  jeep says the rear styling gives a nod to the 1963 wagoneer that started it all, and it's true (although we wonder how many besides us will remember mom's '63 wagoneer in high school that we snuck to the drag strip in the next state, one sunday afternoon, and ripped off crowd-pleasing 4-wheel-drive holeshots).  the backlight balances the slope of the windshield, although, retro touch notwithstanding, the entire rear view looks like that of a thousand other full-size suvs. That's because function rules, as it should; when suv rear-end styling gets fancy, visibility is often lost. We also like the flipper glass window in the liftgate, which has a convenient opening handle. The vehicle locks with the press of a button on the door handle, like at the tailgate. This is nice.  the body-colored parts in the laredo (mirrors, door handles, ding strip) look better than the chrome trim on the upscale overland, whose 20-inch wheels with five thick spokes just look big and bright and unimaginative. Far more jeeps will be laredo models (65 percent, expects jeep) with 17- or 18-inch wheels, which look better.  there are some new colors, including a dark green that's non-metallic, bringing a welcome and rugged touch, like a nod to the wrangler. interiorno jeep has ever felt this high-quality inside (especially when it gets rolling). A fold-flat front seat is standard, adding to the 68. 7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats flat. The rear seats recline 18 degrees, and with the added legroom, life is easy back there. The grand cherokee would make a great family vacation vehicle. There's also an abundance of storage pockets and bins, including two bins under the cargo floor. A new rear suspension allows the spare tire to be stored inside the vehicle under the cargo floor, as opposed to underneath it.  the front door openings are 2 inches wider and 2 inches higher, and the rear doors open 78 degrees compared to 67 degrees on the previous model. That increased convenience is just one of the many details that make the 2011 grand cherokee such an improvement.  jeep engineers also spent a lot of time on nvh, and their work is reflected in the very quiet cabin, even with the throttle floored, even over rough pavement. We haven't seen a model with cloth seats, but jeep has always done good rugged cloth. The stitching on the overland's leather dashboard looks classy.  the instrument panel is redesigned, nicely, with clean white numbers and needles and nice backlight. The tachometer adds a blue area, from 800 to 2500 rpm, a reminder of the best fuel-mileage range.  the three-spoke steering wheel tilts and telescopes, and includes cruise control with audio buttons at the back of the spokes. The overland steering wheel is wood from about 10 to 2, and it makes the steering wheel too thick, because of the heating ele. 2001 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Nothing could be farther from the truth. It got a complete redesign in 1999 that brought a roomier, more comfortable cabin and smoother engines, which helped it win a host of industry accolades. Decent around-town comfort combined with dirt-track-worthy underpinnings have helped it maintain its place in the hearts of loyal customers. lineuptwo trim levels are available, laredo and limited. Retail prices: laredo 2wd 27,300); laredo 4wd 29,270); limited 2wd 32,665) limited 4wd 35,095).  both trim levels offer a long list of standard features, including air conditioning, anti-lock brakes, power windows, doors and mirrors, and cruise control. For 2001, laredo gets an appearance package that includes leather seats, fog lamps and 17-inch alloy wheels. Limited adds automatic climate control, heated mirrors, 10-way power seats with mirror memory, and an infinity 180-watt am/fm/cassette stereo system with cd.  two engines are offered. Standard equipment is jeep's 4. 0-liter inline-6, which was re-engineered for 1999. It's quieter, cleaner and more powerful, producing 195 horsepower. Optional is a 235-horsepower 4. 7-liter overhead-cam v8 that was introduced last year. The five-speed carries a second overdrive ratio for better highway fuel economy.  grand cherokees come standard with rear-wheel drive, but that seems like buying a louisville slugger just to hit rocks. There's no mistaking it for something else. The current model is three inches longer than pre-1999 versions but rides on the same wheelbase. Slightly rounded edges and a subtle bulge to the roofline have done nothing to mar an instantly recognizable shape. interiorthe front seats are comfortable, with thickly padded longitudinal ribs, but they seem a bit cushy for serious off-road driving. Climbing into the back seats is much easier than before, however, because the rear doors are wider.  more space is available for cargo because the spare tire was moved from its upright position on the left rear side of the cargo compartment to lie down under the load floor. Part of that impression comes from the high seating position. Controls and switches, including the jeep's once-balky turn signal/wiper combination stalk, have been improved in feel and operation. One reason the spare was relocated to under the load floor was to give more visibility rearward. This view was formerly blind because that's where the spare used to be. driving impressionjeep's grand cherokee drives like a truck, with a tall, body-rolling ride. Off-road, or driving down a bumpy, rutted rural lane, it feels controlled and steady. There's no need to slow down for rough railroad crossings in the grand cherokee.  underneath, the grand cherokee still sits atop live axles. The trend among competing sport-utilities is to use independent suspensions for better highway performance. But the jeep's live axle is only a drawback on paper. The jeep retains its unitbody integrated truck frame-and-body design. This unusual design strategy - also used by the smaller jeep cherokee and the nissan pathfinder - results in a platform that is lighter and more rigid than it would be using more traditional designs. With adjustments for similar equipment, jeep says the new grand cherokee is about 50 pounds lighter overall. Less weight and a tighter turning radius help make the grand cherokee more maneuverable.  steering is quick but isolated, despite a thorough restructuring of the front engine cradle and front suspension and steering component mounts. But that's the same for all of the top-selling sport-utilities. Like them, the jeep is still a truck, sitting tall, rolling side-to-side in corners and high winds.  the biggest improvement in the ride of the grand cherokee is a newfound tendency to stay pointed straight ahead. A triangle link that replaces the panhard rod locating the rear axle is directly responsible for this improvement. Careful tuning of suspension and drivetrain mounts allows the live axles of the jeep a lot of compliant movement. The axles move and pivot on large bumps and dirt holes where the independent suspensions of other suvs reach their limits of travel and ultimately toss about the occupants inside.  with the 4. 7-liter v8, the grand cherokee accelerates smoothly, with none of the mechanical grumbling and roaring of the previous engines. With single overhead cams on each cylinder bank, the 4. 7-liter v8 produces 235 horsepower. Hurrying up a mountain or around weekend-warrior crazies is a breeze with the higher second gear.  grand cherokees with the six-cylinder engine come with jeep's renowned selec-trac system. This works well in heavy rainstorms or in the winter when roads are partially covered by snow and ice. Quadra-drive is the same system as quadra-trac ii, but it adds hydraulically locking front and rear differentials. By using three differentials, the system automatically sends torque front-to-rear and side-to-side whenever a wheel slips. It serves as a good suburban vehicle.  but it also tracks like daniel boone through the backcountry, and jeep claims that many of its customers use their vehicles for that purpose. Indeed, only land rovers and toyotas can compete with jeep when it comes to trail running. When the going gets rough, the jeep grand cherokee is a high-quality tool that delivers. model lineuplaredo 2wd 27,300); laredo 4wd 29,270); limited 2wd 32,665) limited 4wd 35,095). assembled indetroit, michigan. options as tested4. 7-liter v-8 engine 1,560); full-size spare tire and matching wheel 160); sienna pearl coat paint 200); quadra-drive 4wd 550). model testedlimited 4wd 35,095).
